Charitable Society of the Natives from Catalonia (Catalan: Societat de Beneficència de Naturals de Catalunya), also known as the Casal Català or the Beneficencia Catalana,[2] is a charity association founded by the Catalan immigrants in Havana, Cuba, in 1840.[3][4]

Overview

The association is considered the most ancient social entity in the world, and was founded by a group of 102 emigrants from Catalonia, led by Antoni Font and Josep Gener.[3][5] It was founded to assist the Catalans who did not make a lot of money and were stranded in the Cuban capital. They began to grow in numbers since the independence of Cuba 1n 1900. Some members of the organization were José Murillo and Joaquim Muntal, who was vice-president from 1925 to 1928.

Its main activity is to give economic support to the members but, with the passing of years, the Catalan Charity has incorporated a welfare function, some cultural and festive activities. With more than 1,400 partners, they promote different activities related to Catalonia as habaneres, the celebration of Sant Jordi, esbart dansaire, puntaires, poety readings, concerts and film screenings.[1] [5]

Another one of their objectives is the maintenance of the Montserrate hermitage that was planned to be installed in the square of the Revolution in the last years of the Government of Fulgencio Batista, but finally built in a farm near of the Havana airport at the end of 1950s. It is a replica of the S'Agaró church and houses a copy of Virgin of Montserrat.[5]

With over 170 years of history, the association has of a legacy of documenting the economic and social situations of Catalan emigrants, and has received awards from the Institute of Catalan Studies, the Generality of Catalonia and the Cross of St.George 1993.[6]
