Robert "Bob" Duggan is an American venture capitalist and business magnate. He is the former CEO of biopharmaceutical company Pharmacyclics[1] and previously served as CEO of surgical systems maker Computer Motion from 1997 to 2003.[2]

Duggan received $3.5 billion from the $21 billion sale of cancer-drug maker Pharmacyclics to AbbVie in "one of the biggest paydays ever from the buyout of a publicly held company",[3][4][5] which allowed him to donate an estimated 100 million dollars to the International Association of Scientologists.

As CEO and Chairman of Pharmacyclics from 2008 to 2015, Duggan had opted not to receive compensation from the company.[6] As of February 2017, Duggan owned a 15.4% stake in the pharmaceutical company, Pulse Biosciences Inc.[7]

Personal life

Duggan attended, but did not graduate from the University of California, Santa Barbara and University of California, Los Angeles.[8]

Bob, and especially his former wife Patricia (Trish) Duggan, are members of the Church of Scientology. Duggan has been referred to as the church's "largest financial supporter" by former Scientology executive Mark Rathbun.[9]

As a courtesy, Scientology operatives allegedly arranged for at least one of his adopted children to be sent off to live with a Scientology family in South Africa.[10] Attempts to remove media coverage of this incident led to it becoming more widely publicized, in a case of the Streisand Effect.[11][12] However, in late 2017 reports emerged that he was no longer personally involved with Scientology, though media requests for comment remained unanswered.[13]
