David M. Labrava (born October 19, 1962)[3] is an actor, writer, tattoo artist, member of the Hells Angels[4][5] and motorcycle enthusiast best known for playing Happy in the FX series Sons of Anarchy.

Early life

Labrava was born in Miami, Florida but was raised in Europe.[1] He grew up riding dirt bikes and got his first Harley Davidson when he was 17 years old.[1][4]

Career

Labrava was hired to be the Technical Advisor for Sons of Anarchy and then was cast as Happy; he was with the show since its inception in 2008 to its finale in 2014.[6] He also co-wrote Season 4/Episode 10, titled "Hands".[1]

Labrava writes a column in the national hot rod magazine, 'Ol Skool Rodz, called "Burnin' Rubber with Jimmy Carbone". He is credited as Dave "D.L." Labrava.[7] Before that he used to write for the Horse Motorcycle magazine and built a bike that made the cover in March 2001.[8]

He also owns a tattoo shop called "Evil Ink" located in Oakland, California, a film company called "Artful Dodger Filmworks", and his own clothing line called "DOGKULCHA" which benefits animal rescue.[6]

Personal life

As of 2013, Labrava resides in Oakland, California. He practices Buddhism.[2]

Arrest

Labrava was arrested in August 2008, in Missoula County, Montana, on two counts of felony drug possession and two misdemeanor charges. Missoula County Sheriff's Deputies originally went to Labrava's hotel room after a man approached them at a nearby gas station and said a female friend was being held against her will. The deputies removed the alleged victim and took Labrava into custody. The city police took over the case, as the alleged assault was in their jurisdiction. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the room, where they found cocaine wrapped in a dollar bill, a baggie containing 1.5 grams of hashish, a misdemeanor amount of marijuana, and a narcotics pipe. Labrava was in town for the Hells Angels' annual USA Run.[5]
