Summary

Painting information
Artist Antoine-Louis Barye (1795–1875)
Title Python Crushing a Gnu
Year circa 1850s-1860s
Technique watercolor with gum heightening on moderately textured, moderately thick, cream wove paper
Dimensions 32.7 cm × 49.8 cm (12.9 in × 19.6 in)
Current location Walters Art Museum Baltimore, United States of America
Notes English:  Barye has returned to a theme that he first explored in 1834-1839, when he modeled this subject as one of four animal combats that stood at the foot of the "Tiger Hunt" (Walters 27.176) in the duke of Orléans's table centerpiece. In this unusually large watercolor, the setting is the Forest of Fontainebleau during daylight.
