Summary

Bust of Charles II.

Signed and dated 1684.
Marble.
Carved in Genoa, Italy by Honor Pelle (active 1679-1694).
Signed on the truncated right arm: 1684 HONORE PELLE, F.

This portrait of Charles II portrays him in the dynamic Baroque manner used by the Roman sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) for his portraits of European rulers. Since the sculptor, Honor Pelle, probably never visited England, it is likely that this bust was based on an earlier portrait of the King. The King is shown as if in the act of turning, and the movement is shown in the carving of the lace cravat and the loose, swirling drapery.

Given by Henry Durlacher.
