Summary
Arms of Beaumont of Youlston, Shirwell, Devon: Barry vair and gules, as seen on the monument in Gittisham Church, Devon, to Henry Beaumont (d.1590/1), possibly restored (See <a href="//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BeaumontWillingtonArmsGittishamDevon.JPG" title="File:BeaumontWillingtonArmsGittishamDevon.JPG">File:BeaumontWillingtonArmsGittishamDevon.JPG</a>, quartered, one quarter barry of 7, the other barry of 8). The Beaumont arms surviving on the western arch of the Gatehouse to Dunster Castle in Somerset, erected by Sir Hugh Luttrell (d.1521), shows barry of 8. (See <a href="//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LuttrellHeraldicPanel_Circa1500_Gatehouse_DunsterCastle_Somerset.PNG" title="File:LuttrellHeraldicPanel Circa1500 Gatehouse DunsterCastle Somerset.PNG">File:LuttrellHeraldicPanel Circa1500 Gatehouse DunsterCastle Somerset.PNG</a>). The number of bars is determined by the shape of the shield, as the proportions of a unit of vair is fixed. Six bars specified (Barry of six vair and gules) in Vivian, Heralds' Visitations of Devon, 1895, p.65, in which given as Vairé azure and argent, over all two bars gules. Pole gives the arms as: Barry of 6 verry & geules (sic) <a href="//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=William_Pole_(antiquary)&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="William Pole (antiquary) (page does not exist)">Pole, Sir William</a> (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, <a href="//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sir_John_de_la_Pole,_6th_Baronet&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Sir John de la Pole, 6th Baronet (page does not exist)">Sir John-William de la Pole</a> (ed.), London, 1791, p.469.
