The arms were granted on January 26, 1970. The lion was part of the arms of both the two old districts. Similarly many very influential noble families from the area used a lion in their arms; f.e. the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diez" class="extiw" title="en:Diez">County of Diez</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Nassau" class="extiw" title="en:House of Nassau">House of Nassau</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_of_Katzenelnbogen" class="extiw" title="en:County of Katzenelnbogen">County of Katzenelnbogen</a> and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_Palatinate" class="extiw" title="en:Electoral Palatinate">Electoral Palatinate</a>. The colours represent the former districts.
