The "indented" division of the shield is taken from the arms of the City of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birmingham" class="extiw" title="en:Birmingham">Birmingham</a>, the discs from the arms of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diocese_of_Worcester" class="extiw" title="en:Diocese of Worcester">Diocese of Worcester</a> and the patee crosses from those of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diocese_of_Lichfield" class="extiw" title="en:Diocese of Lichfield">Diocese of Lichfield</a>. The area that became Birmingham Diocese was part of Lichfield Diocese until <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1837" class="extiw" title="en:1837">1837</a>, and then <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worcester" class="extiw" title="en:Worcester">Worcester</a> until <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1906" class="extiw" title="en:1906">1906</a>.
