Hospital was Gary Young's first solo effort after being asked to leave the band Pavement. Allmusic described it as "a roller coaster of chaotic and disjointed songs." It was recorded in Stockton, California at Young's own studio.

The music video for the song "Plant Man" achieved minor fame—and something of a cult status—when it was featured on Beavis and Butt-head, in the episode "Skin Trade," air date July 11, 1995.
