The Land Acquisition Act, 1894 is a British era law which governed the process of land acquisition in India until 2013 and continues to do so in Pakistan. It allows the acquisition of land for some public purpose by a government agency from individual landowners after paying a government-determined compensation to cover losses incurred by landowners from surrendering their land to the agency. In India, a new Act, The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, replaced this Raj law.[1]
