Jewish Broadcasting Service, formerly Shalom TV until September 24, 2014,[1] is a non-profit national Jewish television network. JBS addresses the spectrum of Jewish life with daily news reports from Israel,India live event coverage and analysis along with cultural programming of interest to the North American Jewish community. The network is a full-time HD and SD Channel. It is an English-language PBS style Jewish-oriented network and is a non-profit organization produced by Jewish Education in Media (JEM), which should not be confused with Jewish Educational Media (JEM), an archive responsible for distributing video and audio material of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and the Lubavitch movement in support of Jewish inreach.
Contents
History
Shalom TV, was founded in 2003 and began telecasting on August 31, 2006. In 2008, Comcast launched Shalom TV On Demand nationally. The On Demand version of Shalom TV then expanded to more than 20 video distributors in more than 40 million homes throughout North America.
In May 2012 Shalom TV announced the launch of their own Roku channel, opening their availability up to anyone with a Roku box.[2] On December 7, 2012, Optimum (Cablevision) launched the Shalom TV Channel. .[3]
Shalom TV was renamed the JBS Channel on September 24, 2014.[1]
Programming
Programs on JBS reflect and address the diversity and pluralism of the Jewish experience. The JBS Channel features:
- Daily IBA newscasts from Israel,[4]
- Live late breaking stories and programs that enable viewers to call in and talk to guests and live Friday evening services.
- Public affairs events
- American, Israeli and Yiddish films[5]
- Roundtable discussion of issues facing the Jewish community worldwide
- Jewish Studies programs including the teaching of Hebrew and commentary on basic tenets of Judaism[5]

- 92nd Street Y presentations[6]

- Interviews with leading figures on the world Jewish stage and Israel travel documentaries.
- High Holiday services and original series.[5]
- From Date to Mate, an original series for Jewish singles, a mockumentary about the urban dating scene.[7]
- The Wisdom of Ruth Westheimer an original television series produced by and airing on JBS, features Ruth Westheimer, a famous sex therapist, media personality, and author.[8]
Viewers
JBS's programming is for every Jew with a sense of Jewish identity, and for members of the Jewish community seeking their roots.[9] JBS is not intended exclusively for people of the Jewish religion. Televised offerings are also for anybody with a passion for learning and a desire to gain a greater understanding of Jewish tradition, Jewish life, and the land of Israel.
