Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc., is a nuclear power company headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. The company operates six nuclear power units at three plants: the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant and the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant. Combined, these three plants supply around 20% of the energy used in Alabama and Georgia. The company is a subsidiary of Southern Company.

Nuclear Power Generating Facilities
Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant
The Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant is located in Dothan, Alabama on 1,850 acres (7.5 km2). The facility was the first nuclear power plant to be constructed by Southern Company in the state of Alabama. Construction of the plant began in 1970 with the first reactor unit coming on-line in 1977, followed by the second unit in 1981. The plant is named after the former President and Chief Executive Officer of both Alabama Power and Southern Nuclear, Joseph McConnell Farley. It is the only nuclear plant wholly owned by Southern Company or by one of its subsidiaries.[1]
Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant
The Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant is located in Baxley, Georgia. Construction began in 1968 on Georgia's first nuclear power plant. The first unit came on-line in 1975 and the second unit in 1979. Ownership of the plant is made up of Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power Corporation, Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Water & Light Sinking Fund Commission.[2]
Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant
The Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant is located in Waynesboro, Georgia. Like the Hatch Nuclear Plant, ownership of the Vogtle plant is also made up of Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power Corporation and the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia, but with The City of Dalton also having a percentage of ownership. The plant was named after Birmingham native Alvin W. Vogtle who served as president of Southern Company [3]
