The Tees–Wear derby is a football local derby contested between Middlesbrough and Sunderland who are only separated by 26 miles, in the North East of England. The Tees–Wear derby is not quite as intense or as famous as the Tyne-Wear derby; however, it remains an important game to both sets of fans. The rivalry is beginning to pick up momentum, in the last few meetings there have been clashes between both sets of fans; it can often act as a substitute to the most important derby. This often happened in the late 1990s when the two teams spent a lot of their time at the top of Division 1.

In the 2008–09 Premier league season, the results were:

  • Sunderland 2–0 Middlesbrough
  • Middlesbrough 1–1 Sunderland

In 2011–12 the teams played in the FA Cup:

  • Sunderland 1–1 Middlesbrough 28 January 2012
  • Replay – Middlesbrough 1–2 Sunderland (AET) 8 February 2012.

In 2012–13 the teams played in the Football League Cup

  • Sunderland 0–1 Middlesbrough 30 October 2012[1]
