Chang An Airlines Co., Ltd. (长安航空 Cháng'ān Hángkōng) was an airline based in Xi'an, Shaanxi, the People's Republic of China. It operated scheduled, passenger and cargo services within Shaanxi province and to neighbouring provinces. Its main base was Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, with a hub at Yinchuan Hedong Airport.[1] In Nov 29, 2007, it merged with Shanxi Airlines and China Xinhua Airlines to form Grand China Air, a subsidiary of Hainan Airlines.

History

In order to develop local economy and aviation industry, in September 1990, Shaanxi Province Government planned to organise a local airlines with purchasing 3 Xian Y-7 aircrafts. In 2 March 1992, Shaanxi Province Government named the local airlines being prepared as Chang An Airlines. The airlines was suggested to be operated by Shaanxi Province Government and several aircraft manufactures. In 11 April 1992, Chang An Airlines was formally founded, with meanwhile merging Dapeng Airlines. In 5 January 1993, the first flight of Chang An Airlines operated, from Xi'an to Yulin. Then, Chang An Airlines was transfer to be operated by Shaanxi Province Government only, after other aircraft manufactures quited due to the new regulation.

In 30 August 2000, Chang An Airlines was purchased and merged by HNA, and became a modern developing airlines. In 1 July 2002, the first Boeing 737-400 of Chang An Airlines was put into operation, which is the first Boeing aircraft operated in Shaanxi Province. In October 2002, Chang An Airlines was merged to be operated by Hainan Airlines with Xinhua Airlines and Shanxi Airlines together, and shared the IATA code "HU" and airlines logo.

Now, Chang An Airlines owns 4 Boeing 737-800 aircrafts.
