Nizamabad District is located in the north-western region in the state of Telangana, India. Nizāmābād is the current and official name of the district. The city of Nizamabad is the district headquarters. The district has 3 municipalities and a corporation at Nizamabad.

Etymology

Nizam stands for Nizam, the governor (of the empire) of Hyderabad State and Abad means 'Long Live'. Nizamabad was founded in the year 1905[5] when Nizam's Dominion were recognized, where upto it was known as Indur which was supposed to have originated from the name of the King Indradatta who seems to have flourished it during the 5th century A.D.[6][7] Later during the 18th century the Nizams ruled over the Deccan region and the district got its name from him.

Overview

Nizamabad is one of the smallest and least populous district in the newly formed state of Telangana, while Nizamabad city which is the headquarters of the district is 3rd largest city after Hyderabad and Warangal. The headquarters has a population of 310,467 as of 2011 Census which again makes it the 3rd most populous city in the state. The district has an area of 7,956 km² while according to 2011 census its population was 2,552,073 of which 23.06% were urban.[1] The total population is roughly equal to the nation of Kuwait or the US state of Nevada.This gives it a ranking of 165th[8] in India (out of a total of 640).The district has a population density of 321 inhabitants per square kilometre (830 /sq mi).

Geography

Nizamabad is located at Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found..[9] Nizamabad is bounded on the north by Adilabad district, on the east by Karimnagar district, on the south by Medak district, and on the west by Nanded district of Maharashtra State and Bidar of Karnataka State. The geographical area of the district is 7,956 square kilometres (3,072 sq mi). The district lies between 180 5' and 190' of the northern latitudes and 770 4' and 780 37' of the eastern longitudes.The Godavari River enters into Telangana from Nizamabad district at Kandhakurthi.

Demographics

Out of the total Nizamabad population for 2011 census, 23.06 percent lives in urban regions of district. In total 588,372 people lives in urban areas of which males are 291,804 and females are 296,568. Sex Ratio in urban region of Nizamabad district is 1016 as per 2011 census data. Similarly child sex ratio in Nizamabad district was 962 in 2011 census. Child population (0-6) in urban region was 67,471 of which males and females were 34,381 and 33,090. This child population figure of Nizamabad district is 11.78% of total urban population. Average literacy rate in Nizamabad district as per census 2011 is 77.22% of which males and females are 84.31% and 70.29% literates respectively. In actual number 402,216 people are literate in urban region of which males and females are 217,030 and 185,186 respectively.

The district is divided into three Revenue divisions, namely, Bodhan, Kamareddy and Nizamabad. These are sub-divided into 36 mandals, which are in turn divided as 912 villages and 8 towns. These 8 towns includes, 4 statutory (1 municipal corporation, 3 municipalities) and 4 census towns.[13] Nizamabad city is the only municipal corporation and Armoor, Bodhan and Kamareddy are the three municipalities. The 4 census towns are Banswada, Ghanpur, Soanpet, Yellareddy.[14]

Economy

Nizam Sagar Project

With major irrigation projects like Sri Ram Sagar (Pochampahad), Nizam Sagar, Pocharam, Ali Sagar Lift Irrigation, and the Gupta Lift Irrigation agriculture has flourished, and the major crops grown are sugarcane, turmeric, rice, maize, sorghum, pearl millet, and all types of vegetables.

Industrial sector

There are many industries in Nizamabad. There are also industries in the public sector as well. Some of them include Nizam Deccan Sugar Ltd., Shakkar Nagar, Indur Green power Pvt. Ltd., and Nizamabad Corn Products.Nizam Deccan Sugar Factory was the biggest sugar factory in Asia during the reign of Nizams.

Household indicators

In 2007–2008 the International Institute for Population Sciences interviewed 1015 households in 41 villages across the district.[16] They found that 95.3% had access to electricity, 98.2% had drinking water, 37.7% toilet facilities, and 30.4% lived in a pucca (permanent) home.[16] 17.6% of girls wed before the legal age of 18[17] and 84.1% of interviewees carried a BPL card.[16]

In 2006 the Indian government named Nizāmābād one of the country's 250 most backward districts (out of a total of 640).[18] It is one of the ten districts of Telangana currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).[18]

Transport

Roads

Nizamabad district has good road connectivity. Almost all the towns and villages in the district have well laid asphalt roads and are connected to district headquarters. Nizamabad has 2 National Highways passing through it, one being NH 7 which connects Kanyakumari and Varanasi and the other is NH16 which starts from Nizamabad and passes through Karimnagar to Jagadalpur in the state of Chhattisgarh.[19] The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) runs around 700[20] buses from district headquarters on a daily basis, with a bus for every 15 minutes from Nizamabad Bus Station to Hyderabad. They also offer a premium service, with Mercedes Benz buses, from Nizamabad to Hyderabad and Bangalore.[21] TSRTC also connects to other major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Warangal, Tirupathi, Vijayawada etc.

Rail

Nizamabad Railway Station along with Kamareddy Railway Station are the major train stations in the district which are located on Kachiguda-Manmad section of Hyderabad Division of the South Central Railway Zone (SCR). Not all the towns in the district have a rail network coverage but Nizamabad being one of the important stations on the line carters the need of the people. Jankampet Junction which lies on the north of Nizamabad city connects to Bodhan town.

Nizamabad has rail connectivity with major cities in India like Secunderabad, Kacheguda, Warangal, Kazipet, Adilabad, Nanded, Manmad, Khammam, Nalgonda, Mahbubnagar, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Guntur, Nellore, Kurnool, Cuddapah, Tirupati, Erode, Chennai, Banglore, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat and Bhopal.It is served by 30 pairs of trains every day.[22] There are also multiple weekly connections to major Indian cities.

Nizamabad railway station may become a junction connecting northern, southern and western India lines by March 2016.[23] Railway line from Nizamabad-Peddapalli via Armoor & Karimnagar,[24] is under construction. There is also a plan for extending the railway line from Bodhan to Bidar.

Airport

The airport nearest to Nizamabad is Nanded Airport, at 136 km (85 mi) but it is non-operational and has only night landing facilities.[25] Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad, 162 km (101 mi) away, is the nearest international airport. An airport is proposed at Jakranpally near Nizamabad.[26]

Many engineering colleges are located in the district. Vijay Rural Engineering College, Nizamabad (VREC), affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH) is the reputed engineering college located in Telangana. Kakatiya Institutions of Nizamabad is a group og institutions known for their excellence in state of Telangana and the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.

Telangana University is a public university under the government of AP, located at Dichpally, 15 km from the city. There are many educational institutions that provide education namely VREC, Arkay College of Engineering and Technology,[27] Kshatriya College of Engineering,[28] Kakatiya Engineering College for Women, Government Medical College,[29] Nishitha Degree College, etc.

RGUKT, Basar popularly known as IIIT Basar is an autonomous institution located 35 km from Nizamabad. The official name of the institute is Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies. It offers six-year integrated B.Tech programme with three semesters every year for those passing SSC, for award of dual degrees in different specializations of engineering and science.[30]

Tourism

Pocharam Lake
  • Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuaryis a forest and wildlife sanctuary spread across 130 square kilometres (50 sq mi), between the districts of Nizamabad and Medak,[31] it was a former hunting ground of the Nizam that was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the early 20th century.
  • Alisagar is 10 km (6.2 mi) from Nizamabad city and 2 km (1.2 mi) off the Nizamabad-Basar road. The forest spread along with the summer house, well laid out gardens, an island and hilltop guest house make it a favored getaway. Adding to the attraction is the deer park and facilities for trekking and water sports.
  • Badapahad dargah is one of the oldest Muslim pilgrim centers,built in the memory of Hazrat Syed Hussaini,built on top of a hillock,located at a distance of 38 kilometers from the city.
  • Lord Hanuman temple at Sarangapoor, magnificently carved on a hill,which is 5 km away from Nizamabad.

Notable

  • Malavath Purna, a 13-year-old student from Nizamabad became the youngest person ever to climb the Mount Everest when she reached the peak on 25 May 2014. She was accompanied by Sadanapalli Anand, another 17-year-old student from Khammam.[32]
  • Nikhat Zareen is an Indian boxer who won gold medals at International Boxing Tournaments .
  • Yendala Soundarya is the vice-captain of Indian women's national field hockey team.[33]
  • Nithiin, Vennela Kishore and Dil Raju are famous celebrities who works primarily for the Telugu film industry.
  • Sagar Bhogaraju is a young scientist who is in the limelight after his research work in structural biology and biochemistry which was presented at the prestigious Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich, Germany.[34]
