The Southern Historical Society was a public organization founded by Confederate Major General Dabney H. Maury in 1869 to preserve archival materials related to the government of the Confederate States of America and to document the history of the American Civil War from the perspective of the South. It documented Southern military and civilian viewpoints from the Civil War until now.

Overview

They published the Southern Historical Society Papers in the late 19th Century, comprising 52 volumes of articles written by Southern soldiers, officers, politicians, and civilians, which helped preserve valuable historical resources while also defining the Old South and perpetuating the Lost Cause of the Confederacy in Southern memory. Jubal Early was one of the contributors.[1]

The aim was to offer a Southern perspective on the Civil War and oppose the bias of Northern historians.[1]
