It was the 61st edition of the Rome Masters and was part of the Masters Series of the 2004 ATP Tour and of Tier I of the 2004 WTA Tour. Both the men's and women's events took place at the Foro Italico in Rome in Italy. The men's tournament was played from May 3 through May 9, 2004 while the women's tournament was played from May 10 through May 16, 2004.
