3nder is a location-based social discovery service application for iOS that facilitates communication between people interested in polyamory, kink, and alternative sexual preferences such as more than one partner at once.[1][2][3] 3nder was launched in the UK in July 2014[4] and in the US in 2015.[5][6]

3nder is developed by 3nder Ltd., a London-based startup company founded in 2014.

History

3nder is developed by 3nder Ltd., a London-based startup company founded in 2014 by Bulgarian-born Dimo Trifonov.[5][4][7][8]

In October 2015 3nder was awarded $500,000 in seed funding from a pair of unnamed angel investors.[4][5][9][10] The app was launched in the UK in July 2014[4] and in the US in 2015.[5]

Operation

The basic app is free to use, with in-app purchase options for additional functions.[7][11]

A person discreetly signs into the app using Facebook.[2] Choices are made as to the singles or couples a person is looking for, the geographical search area, and sexual preferences.[7] The app then presents other users' profiles to look at.[7] Swiping up or down indicates interest or disinterest in anothers' profile.[2] "Unlike Tinder, the app will show you who is interested in you, allowing the choice of connecting with them or not."[2]

Payment of a monthly subscription enables additional features, such as being able to look at more than just a single photograph before swiping; an incognito mode to prevent being seen by Facebook friends;[7] being able to look at a profile more than once; and requiring a password to open the app.[11]

Court case

In May 2016 it was announced that Tinder parent company Match Group (a part of IAC) had sued 3nder, alleging trademark infringement. Match Group "wants its smaller competitor to shut down and erase its presence from the web entirely to avoid “confusion” between the two apps, claiming the alleged similarity gives 3nder an “unfair advantage”",[12][13][14][15] based on the "supposed pronunciation of 3nder".[12]
