Aizawl North College is an educational institution located in Ramhlun Veng, Aizawl, Mizoram. It was graded B+ by NAAC in 2009. It is currently affiliated with Mizoram University.[1] The College currently has 1120 students.[2]

History

Government Aizawl North College was established in 1988 and got Government Recognition up to Pre University level in 1988.and Degree level in 1990.It is now under the management of the Higher & Technical Education Department. The College got NEHU University Provisional Affiliation up to Pre University (Arts) level w.e.f. 4 October 1989 and Degree level w.e.f. 17 February 1993. The College got Permanent Affiliation w.e.f. 1 July 2006 to Mizoram University. The College received UGC Recognition under 2(f) and 12(b) on 27 September 2007.The Principal of the college at present is Mr Vanlalduha. Apart from the regular courses of undergraduate level,the college has offered various co-curricular ativities for the students as well as faculties such as; 1. National Service Scheme (NSS) 2. National Cadet Corp (NCC) 3. Women Development Cell. Women Development Cell:In order to cater various issues and problems of women in general as well as girls students in higher in education in Mizoram in particular, the principal of Govt. Aizawl North College has issued Office Order No. A.35023/1/08-GANC/UGC dated 8.9.2014, the Women Development Cell was formed on 1st Sep. 2014. The main vision of the formation of the Cell was to cater problems, needs and grievances of women in the college level. Following are the main objectives of the Cell. 1. To look into the grievances of women, both staff members as well as students and to provide guidance and help them. 2. To handle issues related to women’s welfare. 3. To promote gender harmony, gender sensitivity and gender justice among staff and students. 4. To promote awareness on health and hygiene among staff and students. 5. To prevent gender discrimination and sexual harassment.

Following are appointed as the members of the Cell. Chairman : Dr Lalzarmawii, Assoc Prof. Education Dept. Secretary : Ramdinsangi, Asst. Prof. English Dept. 25 members including the Chairman and the Secretary from faculties of various departments and office staffs are appointed as members of the Cell. The First meeting of the Cell constituted different Sub-Comt of the cell as follows: 1. Committee on Grievances and Redressal : Advisers: Mr Zothanhlira, Dept of Mizo, Dr H.Vanlalhruaia, Dept of History. 8 members from faculties and students. 2. Committee on Legal Rights : Advisers : Dr C.Lalhmanmawia, Dept of Pol Sc. 8 members from faculties and students. Committee on Health, Hygiene and Gender Issues. Adviser: Prof R.Lalnuntluanga, Dept of Economics. 8 members from faculties and students. Membership into the Cell: The membership into the Cell is opened for all women from Faculties, Office Staff and students. Annual membership fee is fixed at Rs 100.00 (Rupees hundred) only and Rs 10.00 (Rupees ten) only for Professors, staffs and students respectively. The Cell is now effectively operative and various tentative programmes viz, organizing Seminar, workshop etc in respects of women’s rights and awareness campaign on gender equality and to redress various grievances of girls students in the college level are framed which are to be materialized within a near future. 4. Adventure Club (Officially recognised as Lengteng Adventure Club) 5. Red Ribbon Club.

       In a bid to tackle the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country and the state in particular, the government of Mizoram following the footsteps of the UN, issued guidelines for the formation of Red Ribbon clubs in colleges and universities. As par this direction from the Project Director, of Mizoram State AIDS Control Society, a fully functional Red Ribbon Club of Aizawl North College was formed by the Principal on 28th August 2006.

Major activities of the club. 1. Enrolment of members : All students of Govt. Aizawl North College were enrolled as Red Ribbon Club members for an academic period at the time of admission into the institution. 2. Essay Writing Competition: The RRC of GANC sponsored and organised an Essay Writing Competition in Mizo and English among the students in 2009.The topics for these competitions were chosen on the subject of HIV/AIDS Awareness and Voluntary Blood Donation and attractive prizes were awarded to the winners. 3. Election of Peer Educators: By tradition, RRC, GANC appoints the Vice President and General Secretary of the Students’ Union body and all Class Representative (CRs) as Peer Educators. Apart from this, one male and one female PEs are elected from each class. 4. Participated in Live Phone In programme: Nodal Officer Mr C.Vanlalvuana, Asso. Prof of English Department has participated in a Live-Phone-In programme on 12th August 2009 at All India Radio, ZOAWI FM which was organised by MSACS on the topic of AIDS Awareness among Youths. 5. Participated in Talk Show: Four Peer Educators and one Nodal Officer (Mr C.Vanlalvuana) participated in a Talk Show for National Voluntary Blood Donation Day on 16th September 2009 which was jointly organised by MSACS and Association for Voluntary Blood Donation (AVBD). 6. Appointment of One Nodal Officer: The Principal of GANC appointed Ms. Saroj Laldinpuii (Asso. Prof, Dept. of Englsih) as Nodal Officer for RRC, GANC. With this the three Nodal Officers of RRC, GANC are : 1. Mr. K. Vanlalthaa, HOD, Geography Dept. 2. Mr. C.Vanlalvuana, Asso. Prof. Dept. of English. 3. Ms. Saroj Laldinpuii, Asso. Prof. Dept. of English. 7. Meeting with Officials from MSACS:

   Officials from MSAC and CHARCA visited the college and a meeting was held with the Nodal Officers and Peer Educators of RRC, GANC. Various  issues concerning the problems of students concerning HIV/AIDS were discussed and the upcoming RED RIBBON IDOL competition to be organised by MSACS and a local Cable TV operator was also discussed in earnest. It was resovled to hold a song writing competition in Mizo among the students, the winners of which could possibly feature in the theme song of the 

upcoming RED RIBBON IDOL competition. 8. T-Shirts for PE & Nodal Officers:

   Printed T-Shirts (21 nos.) were purchased for Peer Educators and Nodal Officer.

9. Attended Consultation programme: Nodal Officers attended a Consultaion Programme for Nodal Officers at I & PR Auditorium organised by MSACS on 14th & 15th October 2009. 10. Attented Training for Peer Educators : Peer Educators attended a Training Programme for PEs organised by MSACS at Central Hall, Venghlui on 25thNovember, 2009. 11. World AIDS Day, 2009: Nodal Officers & Peer Educators prepared placards for World AIDS Day programme on 27th November 2009 at the college campus. More than 100 RRC members from the college took part in the procession/rally organised by MSACS on 1st December 2009 on World AIDS Day. 12. Red Ribbon Idol & Red Ribbon Football Tournament: Several PEs and RRC members witnessed the finale of the Red Ribbon Idol at Chanmari YMA Hall on 15th December 2009 as well as the Final Match of the Red Ribbon Football Tournament on February 2010 at AR Ground. 13. Questionaire : The RRC of GANC prepared a questionaire among the students. The data collected from this ‘research’ is believed to help in organising further awareness programmes in the college campus. 14. Song/Poetry Writing Competition in Mizo: Prizes for the Song/Poetry Writing Competition in Mizo were distributed at an Advanced Christmas programme organised by the Students’ Union on 30th November 2009. 5. The College is located in Ramhlun Veng, the northern part of Aizawl. Various Government Department offices are within walking distance from the College.
