Alex Meruelo (born 1962/1963 (age 60–61)[1]) is a Cuban-American businessman most widely known for his failed bid to become the majority owner of the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association.

Biography

Meruelo was born in New York City and moved to Los Angeles, California. He attended Don Bosco Technical Institute in Rosemead, CA and received his B.S. from California State University, Long Beach.[citation needed]

Career

He began his career in his father's tuxedo business.[2] In 1985 he opened the first of what became the La Pizza Loca Southern California pizza chain.[1] He expanded his business focus, founding the Meruelo Group, which has grown into a construction and real estate development firm that also owns a bank,[1] Los Angeles-based TV station KWHY-TV, a MundoFox affiliate,[3] Grand Sierra Resort,[1] and other businesses.[4]

Due to financial problems, Meruelo's deal to buy the Atlanta Hawks fell through on November 4, 2011.
