Angelo Manna (8 June 1935 – 11 June 2001) was an Italian journalist, politician and poet.

Biography

Born in the comune of Acerra, he graduated in jurisprudence and worked at the newspaper Il Mattino from 1960 to 1971. Subsequently, he led for several years on the local television station Canale 21 the television program Il Tormentone. Manna participated with other journalists in the creation of the periodical Cronache dal mondo.

He has been author of writings of history and literature of meridionalistic stamp, with particular reference to the Neapolitan reality. He has written prefaces for recent books and for reprints of rare books.

Independent candidate in the lists of the MSI, in 1983 he was elected deputy until 1987, and taking over in 1988 in the next electoral round. He remained an MP until 1992. From the benches of Montecitorio he made several proposals in defense of the South and its culture, such as: the compulsory teaching of the "Neapolitan language" in public schools, preclusion of contracts from Campania to companies in the North, the foundation of an institution for the protection and enhancement of Neapolitan songs. Finally, he proposed that "O SOLE MIO" be declared a "popular good" and that copyrights be assigned to Naples.

It was March 4, 1991 when, in the Chamber of Deputies, he made a historic interpellation with which he asked the Minister of Defense, represented by the undersecretary Clemente Mastella, to remove the state secret from the archives of the Italian army and on all those documents proving "the intentional bestial crimes perpetrated by the Piedmontese soldiers" against the defenseless populations of the "usurped southern provinces".
