Anthropologie is a multi-channel lifestyle brand that celebrates style, art, culture, design and discovery. The brand currently operates over 200 stores worldwide featuring a curated assortment of women's apparel and accessories, home furnishings, décor, gifts and found objects.

Anthropologie is part of the URBN family of brands that includes Urban Outfitters, Free People, BHLDN and Terrain.[1][2][3][4]

History

Founded by the current URBN chairman and president Richard Hayne, Anthropologie opened its first store in the autumn of 1992 in Wayne, Pennsylvania. In 1998, the brand launched a mail-order catalog and website. In April 2009, Anthropologie opened its first international store in Toronto, followed by subsequent storefronts in Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver and Winnipeg.[5]

October 2009 marked the unveiling of the brand's first European store, located on Regent Street in London. It was followed by additional UK outposts in England and Scotland.

In September 2015, Anthropologie opened a boutique on the ground floor of the historic Paris department store, Bazar de l'Hôtel de Ville (BHV).

Today

Led by David McCreight, CEO of the Anthropologie group, the company now operates over 200 retail stores throughout the US, Canada and the UK.[6]

Armed with a talented team of visual merchandisers and display artists, the brand has been cited for its highly imaginative store fixtures and award-winning windows. Anthropologie stores host various events throughout the year that reflect the creative nature of the company, including "Do it yourself" (DIY) workshops, fashion shows, pop-up farmers markets and birthday parties.

In addition to its brick-and-mortar business, Anthropologie has a broad digital footprint. Its website, anthropologie.com, receives over 10 million visits monthly, while its social media channels—including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter—reach more than 4 million fans daily. In 2013, the brand launched its popular lifestyle blog, which features food and drink recipes, personal styling tips, interviews and décor ideas. More recently, the brand launched the Anthropologie iPhone app to create a seamless mobile shopping experience.

Anthropologie's widely acclaimed print journal has an annual circulation of over 20 million. In 2014, the retailer published its first standalone house and home journal, which highlighted the ongoing expansion of its home business.

In addition to a unique merchandise assortment, Anthropologie partners with many artists and designers from around the world to create limited-run collections in apparel, accessories and home. Past and present collaborators include Tracy Reese, Peter Som, Collette Dinnigan, Mara Hoffman, Liya Kebede, Byron Lars, Chris Benz and Kit Kemp, as well as lesser-known talents.

In 2014, Anthropologie launched a gift registry to celebrate important events and milestones with customers—from weddings to holidays, birthdays and anniversaries.
