Benjamin Cubitt (1795-1848) was an English engineer. He was born in Norfolk and was the brother of William Cubitt (1785-1861). Benjamin was apprenticed as a millwright to his brother William and later became works foreman at John Penn and Sons, Greenwich. Around 1822, Benjamin was placed in charge of the engine and machinery building works of Fenton, Murray and Wood of Leeds. In 1832, he moved to Rothwell and Company of Bolton, where he was again placed in charge of the engine and machinery works. In 1842, he became head of the Brighton, Croydon and Dover Joint Committee, which managed a pool of locomotives for several London railways. His last post was as Locomotive Superintendent of the Great Northern Railway, which he held until his death on 12 January 1848.[1]
