Chillhop is a sub-genre of hip hop. The term was coined in the early 2000s to refer to music that blends jazz elements and samples with hip hop beats and electronic dance music.[1]
Characteristics
Often confused with jazz rap and trip hop, this genre displays more of a neo soul and electronic music influence. However, chillhop's downtempo electronica influences can be heard in most trip hop, and chillhop shares a jazz influence with jazz rap. In a way, chillhop could be seen as a combination of the two genres.
History
Nujabes is considered the father of Chillhop music. Influenced heavily by Jazz Rap from the 1980s, he began producing his own music around 1996. One of his most recognizable works is that of the background music for Shinichirō Watanabe's series Samurai Champloo in 2004. Around that time, Adult Swim (the network that broadcast the show in the USA) began incorporating the genre in their commecial "bumps".[citation needed]
