"Crash Into Me" is a song by American rock group Dave Matthews Band. It was released in December 1996 as the fourth single from their album Crash. It reached number 7 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in March 1997. It is also featured on Dave Matthews Band's first compilation album, The Best of What's Around Vol. 1. The song was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 1998 Grammy Awards.

Background and writing

Dave Matthews wrote Crash into Me on the campus of Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia. The inspiration for the song stemmed from his wife, Ashley Harper, who is an alumna of the College.

In his performance on VH1 Storytellers, Dave Matthews described this song as being about "the worship of women", albeit from a voyeur's perspective, and subsequently does a humorous impression of the woman being watched through the window complaining to the police. He ends by saying that he wrote this song instead of getting arrested.

In the 2010 documentary "The Road to Big Whiskey", Matthews explained that most of "Crash into Me" was inspired by his wife, Ashley Harper, whom he described as "the love of his life".

In popular culture

The song first appeared on film in 1997 for the movie Excess Baggage with Alicia Silverstone, Benicio Del Toro, and Christopher Walken.

This song was featured in the 2001 comedy film Joe Dirt. It was also featured at the end of the pilot episode for Roswell, and is one of the few songs kept for the DVD release, as producers deemed it vital to the show's theme and that it should not be replaced with a different song.

"Crash into Me" was on Clear Channel's list of "songs with questionable lyrics" following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Australian rapper Iggy Azalea sampled the song on "You," featuring American rapper YG, a track from her debut mixtape Ignorant Art, released in 2011.

Cover versions

The song has been covered by various artists including Stevie Nicks, who performed it on her 2008 Soundstage episode. Her version was later released as a single.[1] It has also been covered numerous times by Lee DeWyze, who cites Dave Matthews Band as one of his biggest musical influences. The House Jacks recorded an a cappella version on their album Drive.

Live in concert

When played live, the band usually includes an interpolation of the song "Dixie Chicken" by Little Feat, using the lyrics "I will be your Dixie chicken if you'll be my Tennessee lamb / And we can walk together down in Dixieland."

Stevie Nicks released "Crash into Me" as the first single from her album, The Soundstage Sessions, on March 17, 2009. The promo, with the orchestra version of "Landslide" as the B-side, was serviced to radio on the week of March 3, 2009. It has been serviced to Triple A radio stations, and to XM Satellite Radio channel 45, The Spectrum, and XM channel 51, The Coffee House. The music video for the single has been playing on VH1 occasionally and is from her DVD Live in Chicago.

Stevie Nicks has often referred to the song simply as "Crash", hence the single cover title.[3]
