The Liverpool Custom House was built by John Foster on the site of Liverpool's old dock and was completed in 1839. It was badly damaged during the Second World War, and controversially demolished in 1948 to 'ease unemployment in Liverpool'.[1]

It is the subject of a painting by John Atkinson Grimshaw.[2]
