Electoral region of North Metropolitan

The electoral region of North Metropolitan is a multi-member electoral region of the Western Australian Legislative Council, located in the north-western and western suburbs of Perth. It was created by the Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987, and became effective on 22 May 1989 with seven members who had been elected at the 1989 state election three months earlier. At the 2008 election, it was decreased to six members.

Geography

The Region is made up of several complete Legislative Assembly districts, which change at each distribution.

Members

Since its creation, the electorate has had 22 members. Five of these members had previously been members of the Legislative Council—Joe Berinson and Sam Piantadosi (both North Central Metropolitan), Graham Edwards and Bob Pike (both North Metropolitan) and Max Evans (Metropolitan).

¹ Reg Davies, elected as a Liberal, resigned from the party on 10 July 1991 and sat as an Independent.

² Liberal MLC Bob Pike died on 26 April 1994. On 31 May 1994, Liberal member Iain MacLean was appointed to the resulting casual vacancy.

³ In April 1996, Sam Piantadosi resigned from the Labor Party and continued to sit as an independent. He resigned on 19 November 1996 to contest the seat of Yokine at the 1996 election. On 24 December 1996, Labor member Ed Dermer was appointed to the resulting casual vacancy.

⁴ Liberal MLC Iain MacLean resigned on 19 November 1996 to contest the seat of Wanneroo at the 1996 election. The resulting vacancy was not filled.

⁵ Liberal MLC Alan Cadby resigned to sit as an independent on 2 June 2004, after losing Liberal pre-selection to recontest his seat at the 2005 election.

⁶ Labor MLC Graham Giffard resigned on 11 August 2008 in order to contest the Assembly seat of Swan Hills in the election, where he was beaten by the Liberals' Frank Alban. Carolyn Burton was elected in the resulting countback on 12 September 2008.

⁷ Labor MLC Ljiljanna Ravlich resigned on 10 March 2015. Martin Pritchard was elected to the resulting countback on 21 April 2015.
