Introduction

Hamilton Company is a precision liquid handling company providing manual, semi-automated and automated laboratory products, instruments and solutions for biotechnology, pharmaceutical and clinical diagnostic companies along with academic research institutes and universities. The company is focused on the design, development and manufacturing of liquid handling workstations, process analytics, robotics and automated sample storage solutions.

History

Clark Hamilton started his career at University of California, Berkeley and in 1953; he founded Hamilton Company with a goal of protecting researchers from the risk of radioactive isotope exposure. The first product he designed was a lead lined syringe. Soon afterward, the company expanded into producing a variety of high-precision syringes, needles, HPLC columns, sensors, valves and several types of related laboratory equipment.

Hamilton Robotics entered the high-precision laboratory automation equipment industry with the development of the Microlab® STAR, an automated liquid handling workstation. Hamilton offers a range of platforms from small-scale desktop workstations to large integrated systems to provide solutions for a wide range of applications.

As of 2013, Hamilton focused on five major customer segments including liquid handling robotics, automated sample management, laboratory products, process analytics, and liquid handling components.

Hamilton Storage Technologies

In 2007, Hamilton established Hamilton Storage Technologies to manufacture automated ultra-low temperature storage systems. This enabled Hamilton to fully automate a laboratory workflow—automated storage systems are integrated to liquid handling robots to process the samples, helping ensure sample quality and integrity. In 2014, this affiliate partnered with Askion to expand its cryopreservation portfolio.[1]

Facilities

Hamilton is a privately held company with ISO 9001 certification and employs over 1,400 people worldwide. Business unit headquarters are located in Reno, Nevada; Franklin, Massachusetts; and Bonaduz, Switzerland, with smaller subsidiary offices around the world.

Awards and recognition

Gold Winner of MassEcon Economic Impact Award: In 2013, Hamilton Storage Technologies was named the Southeast Gold winner of the MassEcon Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Award, which celebrates companies that have made an outstanding contribution to the Massachusetts economy.

M.S. Tswett Chromatography Memorial Medal In 1979, Clark Hamilton was the recipient of the distinguished M.S. Tswett Chromatography Memorial Medal, which is awarded to those scientists whose services were most essential to the development of the theory and practice of chromatography.

Industrial Designers Society of America; Business week/Medical & Scientific Products; The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design Hamilton has received recognitions and awards for the SoftGrip pipettes platform for the ergonomic shape and low plunger forces of the SoftGrip pipette that reduces hand and wrist fatigue.
