Harry James Wilkinson (April–June 1864[1] — 7 June 1942 (aged 78)[2]) born in Halifax, was a rugby union footballer of the 1880s, playing at representative level for England, and Yorkshire, and at club level for Halifax,[3] as a Forward, e.g. Front row, Lock, or Back row, he died in Halifax. Prior to Tuesday 27 August 1895, Halifax was a rugby union club.

Playing career

International honours

Harry Wilkinson won a cap for England while at Halifax in 1889 against New Zealand Natives,[4] during the match Harry Wilkinson wore his Yorkshire County Shirt rather than an England shirt.[5]

Change of Code

When Halifax converted from the rugby union code to the rugby league code on Tuesday 27 August 1895, Harry Wilkinson would have been approximately 31. Consequently, he may have been both a rugby union and rugby league footballer for Halifax.

Genealogical information

Harry Wilkinson was the father of the rugby union footballer Harry Wilkinson.[6]
