Institut für Weltraumforschung (Space Research Institute)
The Institut für Weltraumforschung (Space Research Institute, IWF) is one of the biggest institutes of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and is located in Graz. Established in 1970, it has three administrative branches dealing with experimental space research, extraterrestrial physics and satellite geodesy. In reality, the scientists work together in cross-departmental task groups.
Participation in Space Missions
The IWF employs over 80 scientists from a dozen different nations. In 2014 it participated in 16 international space missions that are either active or in preparation such as GOCE, THEMIS, STEREO, Solar Orbiter, Juno, JUICE, Cassini, InSight, BepiColombo, CHEOPS and Rosetta. Mark Bentley of the Institut für Weltraumforschung is one of the investigators of the Rosetta Orbiter to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.[1]
