Jazz Cartier is the stage name of Jaye Adams,[1] a Canadian rapper.[2] His debut mixtape Marauding in Paradise was released in April 2015,[2] and was a longlisted nominee for the 2015 Polaris Music Prize.[3]

Background

Born in Toronto, Ontario,[2] Cartier (whose stepfather worked as a diplomat) moved frequently in childhood with his family, living at various times in the United States, Barbados and Kuwait.[2] He credits the different types of music he was exposed to in these locations as all having had an influence on his own style as a hip hop musician.[1]

He was accepted to an art program at Columbia College Chicago in 2012 but, reluctant to move to a new city without anyone he knew, he returned to Toronto.[2]

Musical career

Cartier had worked on an early version of Marauding in Paradise as early as 2011,[2] but was not satisfied with the album. After moving back to Toronto, he began working with record producer Michael Lantz,[2] and released his first single "Set Fire" in 2014.[4] Performing in Toronto-area music venues, he quickly attracted attention[1] — his track "Switch" was regularly played at Toronto Raptors games by team DJ 4Korners,[2] and at a Toronto Red Bull Sound Select show in March 2015 he was introduced by celebrity rapper Kardinal Offishall.[2]

Marauding in Paradise was released in April 2015.[4][5]

On February 23, 2016, the line up for hip hop artists at the 2016 Osheaga Music Festival were announced; Jazz Cartier was one of the announced acts.[6]
