Jen Silverman is an American playwright born in the United States. She spent time in Scandinavia, Asia, and Europe growing as well as the United States.[1] She completed a BA in comparative literature at Brown University,[2][3] a MFA in playwriting at the University of Iowa,[2] and also studied at Juilliard.[4]

Background

Jen speaks multiple languages such as Portuguese, French, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish.[2] During her life she studied 14 months of Karate, and 10 years of Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do.[2] She has taught theatre and playwriting classes at the University of Iowa, Wheeler High School (RI), Lemme Elementary School in Iowa, and multiple schools in Japan.[2] Silverman completed residencies in New York, Indiana, California, New Hampshire, and Whidbey Island between the years 2009 and 2013.[2]

Awards

Silverman has won multiple awards for her work such as the IRAM Award for an Outstanding New Play (2009), Kate Neal Kinley Fellowship (2010), Marcus Bach Fellowship for New Play (2010), Stanley International Research Award (2010), Orlando Creating Nonfiction Award (2011), Jane Chambers Award (2012), and Ploughshares Emerging Poet Award (2012).[2] She has also received the Yale Drama Series Award,[3] Lilly Award,[12] Kennedy Center's Paula Vogel Playwriting Award,[12] MacDowell Fellow,[12] the Helen Merrill Fund Award in 2015,[3][4] and the PoNY Fellowship (2016-2017).[6]
