Career
Vesey played four years with Harvard University in the NCAA. In his junior year, Vesey's outstanding play was rewarded with a top ten nomination for the Hobey Baker Award.[2] On April 2, 2015, Vesey was named to the Hobey Hat Trick, the 3 finalists for the award, along with University of North Dakota's Zane McIntyre and Boston University's Jack Eichel.[3] In 2016, Vesey once again qualified for the Hobey Hat Trick, going on to win the award on April 8th.[4]
The Nashville Predators made no attempt to trade Vesey's rights at the 2016 NHL trade deadline on February 29 because, according to Predators' GM David Poile, Vesey told assistant general manager Paul Fenton that his plans were still to join the Predators. Vesey's camp contested that claim, and said that they had told the Predators to proceed at the deadline without considering Vesey's status, as he had not yet decided. On March 23, 2016, Poile was informed that Vesey's plans were now to test free agency rather than sign with the Predators. Poile referred to the news as "bizarre" and "a shocker", as Nashville was expecting to sign the forward. Poile stated that he believed Vesey "received bad advice and bad counsel", saying that Vesey stood no chance of receiving a better offer in free agency than Nashville would provide him.[5]
Vesey's decision came as a huge blow to the Predators' organization, who stood to lose a prospect they had spent an upper-round draft pick on, worked to develop for four years, and offered an immediate roster spot and prominent offensive role to. However, it was also within the bounds of the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, which gives teams four years to sign a college draftees and thus allows for the drafted player to move to free agency shortly after his senior year. [6]
Family
His father, Jim Vesey, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the eighth round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, and he played 15 games in the National Hockey League. Jimmy's brother Nolan was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Jimmy's father Jim also works as a scout for the Maple Leafs
