José María Gárate Córdoba

José María Gárate Córdoba (1918 – 2017) was a Spanish military figure and historian.

Biography

Gárate Córdoba was born in Burgos. He attended high school in his hometown, which he finished in 1935. He was a provisional ensign during the Spanish Civil War on the rebel side. After the war he joined the army as a professional soldier and reached the rank of captain at the age of 24. A teacher at two military academies and a member of CESEDEN,[1] his most recognized work is linked to the Military Historical Service. He was a historical adviser in the drafting of the Royal Army Ordinances (1977–1980), an academic at the Fernán González Institute[2] and the Sanmartinian Institute of Buenos Aires. He was the author of an important historiographical work. In 1955, he became interested in the process of canonization of the Cid Campeador promoted by King Philip II and revealed the importance of the efforts and reports of Diego Hurtado de Mendoza.[3]

Of the rest of his abundant work as an anthologist, journalist and occasional literary author, his memoirs on the Civil War, entitled A Thousand Days of Fire, stand out.

He died in Madrid at 99 years of age.
