Kim Jae-hwan (Hangul김재환, born May 27, 1996) is a South Korean singer known to be the first winner of Vocal War: God's Voice and for finishing fourth in Produce 101 Season 2.[1][2] He is currently a member of Wanna One.[2]

Career

2012–2016: Talent-search shows and ShelRock

Kim Jae-hwan first appeared in 2012 as a contestant in the second season of Korea's Got Talent. He auditioned in Daegu with his own rendition of Miss A's "Bad Girl Good Girl" but did not advance to the next round. However, judge Kim Gura made a special request to let Jae-hwan audition again in Seoul, where he received the two votes needed to continue in the show.[3] He made it to the semi-finals before being eliminated.[4]

After the show,[upper-alpha 1] Jae-hwan became a trainee under The Music Works and was selected to be one of the four members of ShelRock, a "hybrid rock" band produced by singer Baek Ji-young.[5][upper-alpha 2] The band frequently busked on the streets of Hongdae and held guerilla performances at different high schools around Seoul to promote the band prior to their debut.[6][7] They even made an appearance on Yang Song E's music video for her debut single "Smiling Goodbye".[8] Unfortunately, in August 2015, debut plants fell through, and ShelRock disbanded.[1][9] Jae-hwan eventually left The Music Works.[1]

In 2016, Jae-hwan appeared on the pilot episode of SBS' Vocal War: God's Voice. He challenged veteran singer Yoon Do-hyun with his own rendition of YB's "Autumn Outside the Post Office" and won, becoming the show's first winner.[1][10] In the next round, he challenged Lena Park with a cover of Park's "Sorry" but did not win, and therefore eliminating him as a contestant.[1]

2017: Produce 101 and Wanna One

Jae-hwan participated in Produce 101 Season 2 as one of the five "Individual Trainees", or trainees not signed under an agency, in the season.[11] He quickly garnered attention for his strong vocal skills during the show's first evaluation, performing Super Junior's "Sorry, Sorry".[12] He continued to impress the audiences in his subsequent performances of I.O.I's "Downpour" and of the original song "Never", and became one of the top vocal standouts of this season.[13][14] In the final, Jae-hwan finished fourth with 1,051,735 votes, securing him a spot as a member of Wanna One.[2] He is the highest ranking "Individual Trainee" from both seasons and the only one to end up in the top 11.[15]

On August 8, Jae-hwan signed an exclusive contract with CJ E&M and will become an official artist under the company once Wanna One's promotions end in 2018.[16][17]
