Synopsis
The story takes place during the Asturian miners' strike of 1934, in a context marked by the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939. Faced with political instability, the Asturian workers' parties (Union de los Hermanos Proletarios, which brings together anarchists and socialists) organized the province's insurrection against Madrid, thinking they were in the vanguard of the Spanish socialist revolution that was to sweep through the entire country.
Reception
"This is the second novel by Joseph Peyré to be publisied in this country," wrote a contemporary critic. "It is the story of the Asturian revolt of 1934, which now appears as a rehersal tothe present bloody conflict in Spain. The writing has the same demoniac quality as that of Peyre’s first, which was Glittering Death, the Goncourt prize winner of 1935."[1]
