Christmas number one

The UK Singles Chart is a weekly record chart compiled by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on behalf of the British record industry. The chart week runs from Friday to Thursday, with the chart date given as the following Thursday.[1]

Audio streaming data was incorporated into the chart in 2014, with 100 streams equivalent to one sale.[1] In 2017, the OCC introduced an exception for songs that had spent a certain time on the charts and whose consumption had declined, whereby these songs are calculated at a rate of 300 streams equivalent to a sale.[2] Ellie Goulding was the first artist to top the chart in the decade with her cover of Joni Mitchell's song "River".

The following singles have all been number one in the United Kingdom during the 2020s:[3][4]

Ellie Goulding had the first number-one single of the decade with "River", a cover of the 1971 song by Joni Mitchell. She topped the charts again in April 2023 with "Miracle", her fourth overall.

Mariah Carey made chart history when "All I Want for Christmas Is You" finally reached number-one in 2020, after previously reaching the peak of 2 in 1994, 2017, 2018 and 2019. In its 70th week the song reached the top spot; this is the longest amount of time spent in the top 40. The song returned to number-one in December 2022.

Wham! had the first number-one single of 2021 with "Last Christmas" 36 years after its original release. The song returned to number-one in December 2022, January 2023 and December 2023.

Olivia Rodrigo had the longest running number-one debut single with "Drivers License" in January 2021 since "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley in 2006. The former spent 9 weeks at number one. Her second number-one single "Good 4 U" spent 5 weeks at number one in June 2021, and her third "Vampire" spent 1 week at number one in September 2023.

Ed Sheeran earned his tenth number one single with "Bad Habits" in July 2021, and replaced himself with his eleventh number one single "Shivers" in September 2021. He earned his twelfth number one single with "Merry Christmas" and replaced himself again with his thirteenth number one single, the charity single "Sausage Rolls for Everyone" in December 2021. In April 2023, Sheeran earned his fourteenth number one single with "Eyes Closed".

Adele earned her third number-one single with "Easy on Me" in October 2021. The song went on to have the highest first week sales of 2021 and the highest for any single since 2017.
File:Stephanie Beatriz 2018.jpg
Stephanie Beatriz along with the cast of Encanto made history in January 2022 when "We Don't Talk About Bruno" became the first original number-one single from the Disney franchise.
Kate Bush broke three chart records when "Running Up That Hill" topped the charts in June 2022: the longest gap between two of an artist's number one singles (44 years after "Wuthering Heights" reached number one in 1978), the longest time for a song to reach number one after its initial release and the oldest female artist to achieve a number one single.

Taylor Swift earned two number-one singles with "Anti-Hero" and "Is It Over Now?", both of which achieved the prestigious Chart Double with their respective parent album topping the Albums Chart at the same time.

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 The artist, single, date of reaching number one and number of weeks at number one are those given by the Official Charts Company.
  2. The record labels are those given by the OCC.[5]
  3. This was originally issued as a single by EMI Records, the majority of whose catalogue was purchased along with Virgin Records by Universal Music Group (UMG). However, UMG did not purchase the catalogue of Kate Bush as the licence for her work was part of the Parlophone-deal arranged with Warner Music (WMG). Fish People[6] is Kate Bush's record label, who also issued a version with a re-recorded vocal in 2012, with the licensing rights currently belonging to Rhino Entertainment, the catalogue division of WMG.[7][8][9][10]
  4. This was originally issued as a single by Rosebud, Eliza Rose's own independent record label and picked up by Warner Music UK a few weeks after charting.[11] After being listed solely under the Warner Music UK banner, the record label credit was changed for a third time to Warner Records X One House[12][13][14] during the record's stay in the UK charts
  5. Asylum Records was jointly credited alongside Perfect Havoc, a dance record label founded by Adam Griffin and Robert Davies, on Joel Corry's number one hit.[15][16][17][18][19][20][21]
