Awards for Game of Thrones
2011
For its first season, the show received 13 Emmy nominations at the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards and picked up two wins including Outstanding Main Title Design and Peter Dinklage's first Emmy nomination and win for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama series for the episode "Baelor", the only cast nomination received.[1] His award was the show's only major win of the event.[2][3] The show was nominated for 2 Golden Globe awards including Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor, also taken by Dinklage.[4][5] The show picked up a total of 11 awards for the year and a further 27 nominations.
2012
At the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, the show's second season was nominated for 12 awards, the 13th most nominations of the year and 1 less than in 2011. However, it went on to triple its 2011 wins, taking 6 creative Emmys of the 9 for which it had been nominated, giving it the most wins of the event and beating out competition from shows with more nominations including American Horror Story (17 nominations) and Mad Men (16 nominations).[6][7] Overall, it tied Homeland for most Emmy wins.[8] Dinklage also received his second Best Supporting Actor Emmy nomination, again the only cast member to be nominated.[9] Dinklage also received a Satellite Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.[10] The show has received a total of 13 awards for the year and a further 18 nominations. On December 24, 2012, TorrentFreak reported that the show was the most illegally downloaded show of 2012, with 4.28 million downloads of a single episode; the figure was slightly higher than the shows estimated 4.2 million viewers, and most of the downloads occurred outside of the United States.[11]
2013
At the 11th annual Visual Effects Society awards, the show won four awards, the most of the TV shows nominated.[12] In June, the show was placed at number 40 on the list of the 101 best written shows of all time by the Writers Guild of America, assessing series from the previous 70 years.[13] At the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards, the show's third season was nominated for 17 awards. Emilia Clarke received her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama series for the episode "And Now His Watch Is Ended", alongside Dinklage's third Outstanding Actor nomination, and Diana Rigg's Outstanding Guest Actress nomination.[14][15][16] The show won two Creative Emmy awards, down from six the previous year.[17] HBO had attempted to submit the show for a third consecutive Writers Guild Award for Best Drama Series, but a technical error during the process meant it was not submitted and the fault was discovered too late for the show to be entered.[18] Game of Thrones received its third consecutive Satellite Award nomination for Best TV Genre show, and Clarke and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau received Supporting Actor nominations.[19] The show also made its third consecutive appearance on the American Film Institute list of the top 10 programs of the year.[20] On December 25, 2013, TorrentFreak reported that the show was the most illegally downloaded show of 2013, with 5.9 million downloads of the season finale.[21] Same year it was named No. 40 in a list of the 101 Best-Written TV Series of All Time by the Writers Guild of America.[22]
2014
Dinklage was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series in 2014, his first for the series, and eleventh individual award nomination for the show.[23] Game of Thrones was the most successful TV nominee at the Visual Effects Society awards for the second year in a row, winning three of its four nominations.[24] The Saturn Awards saw the show tie for most nominations with Breaking Bad and Falling Skies with five.[25] The show also won the International Program award at the year's Royal Television Society awards.[26] At the inaugural Location Managers Guild Awards took the most awards, two in total, and claimed the top TV award.[27]
For the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards, Game of Thrones was nominated for 20 awards, the highest number of nominations that year, and an increase over the 17 nominations that it received in 2013. Actress Lena Headey received her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Cersei Lannister, alongside Dinklage's fourth Outstanding Actor nomination. The episodes "The Lion and the Rose", "The Watchers on the Wall", and "The Children" were the most recognized of the show's fourth season, receiving three nominations each.[28][29][30] The show won four Creative Emmy awards, up from two the previous year, and the joint-fifth most wins of the event.[31] On December 26, 2014, TorrentFreak reported that the show was the most illegally downloaded show for the third year in a row, with 8.1 million downloads of the 2014 season finale, compared to 7.1 million TV viewers.[32]
2015
Game of Thrones was the most successful TV nominee at the Visual Effects Society awards for the third consecutive year, winning three of its five nominations.[33][34] At the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards the show's fifth season was nominated for 24 awards, the most nominations of the show ahead of American Horror Story: Freak Show (20 nominations) and Olive Kitteridge (13 nominations). Dinklage received the award for Best Supporting Actor, for which both Clarke and Headey were also nominated, and Rigg was nominated for Best Guest Actor. The season's eighth episode, Hardhome, was the most technically recognised episode with 6 nominations, including Outstanding Cinematography, and Production Design, and the final episode, Mother's Mercy (4 nominations) was recognised for wins for Outstanding Writing (D.B. Weiss and David Benioff) and Outstanding Direction (David Nutter).[35][36][37] The show ultimately won twelve awards, setting a new record for most Emmy wins by a series in a single year, replacing the previous holder The West Wing's nine wins, and tying that show and Hill Street Blues for the most wins by a drama series throughout its run.[38]
2016
Game of Thrones was the most successful TV nominee at the Visual Effects Society awards for the fourth consecutive year, winning four of its nine nominations.[39] The show became the first series to win multiple Location Managers Guild Awards, with Location Managers Robert Boake and Tate Araez taking home the award for Outstanding Locations in a Period Television Series.[40]
