List of finalists of The Voice Kids (Philippines season 1)

The finalists of the season one of The Voice Kids are the contestants of the show who advanced to the Finals, every finalists should pass the blind auditions, The Battles, The Sing-offs, and the live semi-finals, before qualifying for the Final round of the competition.[1]

There were four finalists who advanced to the round of the said competition, the season one of the series.[2]

Finalists

Lyca Gairanod

During ABS-CBN's The Voice Kids Season 1 auditions aired on May 8, 2014, Gairanod performed Aegis' "Halik",[3] Coach Sarah Geronimo pressed her buttons for her, Coach Lea Salonga was supposed to press her button, but did not, because she feels that the two were meant to be vocalizing that she was 'surprised that she hit all of the high notes on the song'.[4]

She advanced to the sing-offs by winning The Battles on July 12, 2014 against Isaac Zamudio and Lee Marcelino, they sang Isang Lahi by Regine Velasquez, Coach Lea Salonga likened Gairanod to Nora Aunor because of being simple and terrible even being small, and said if she would have a chance to pick, she would go for Gairanod.[5]

The Sing-offs immediately followed by the Battles.[6] Per team, two artists will be chosen by their respective coaches for the Live shows.[7] Unlike the Battles where the coach picks the song what the artists are going to sing, in the Sing-offs the song is solely chosen by the artists.

She advanced to the live semi-finals after singing off and being chosen by Coach Sarah Geronimo, as one of the two would be representatives of team Sarah among five contenders. She sang the Tagalog version of Luther Vandross' Dance With My Father.[8]

She eventually advanced to the finals after singing her coach Sarah Geronimo's "Pangarap na Bituin" during the live semi-finals held on July 19, 2014 in Newport Performing Arts, Theater, Resorts World Manila, Pasay City.[9] She received the highest votes.[10] While coach Lea Salonga was at a loss for words during her performance, stating that 'this song is usually sang by persons that has dreams to fulfill, you sang it classicly'., her mentor Geronimo stated that Gairanod slowly reaches her dream and she could help her family to escape from poverty.[9]

The voting mechanics for the Live finals will be based on the accumulated votes per round: power ballad round, upbeat song round, and a duet with a celebrity round. Voting lines will only be opened between the end and the start of each rounds. At the end of the three rounds, all votes will be tallied and the artist gaining the highest accumulated votes will be declared as the winner.[11]

The first episode of the Finals was opened by the top four artists with their medley rendition of Sponge Cola's "Bitiw," Rocksteddy's "Superhero," and Sandwich's "Sugod."[11]

She sang Regine Velasquez's Narito Ako on the first round of the finals, she also sang Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe on the second round, and Basang-basa sa Ulan on the third round, At the end, she was proclaimed the winner and she fell in tears.[12]

Darren Espanto

During ABS-CBN's The Voice Kids Season 1 auditions aired on June 1, 2014, Espanto performed Jessie J's "Domino", which he formerly sang during The Next Star at age 11. Coaches Sarah Geronimo and Bamboo Mañalac both pressed their buttons for him, vocalizing that he 'can be groomed to be a recording artist, a total package'.[13] Although Espanto revealed that he was Manalac's front act during one of his concerts in Canada, he still picked Geronimo stating that she could help him a lot in the music industry.[14][15]

Espanto eventually advanced to the finals after singing Whitney Houston's "One Moment in Time" during the live semi-finals held at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila.[15] He was the second one to receive the highest votes, after Lyca Gairanod.[16] Salonga, one of the coaches commented that Espanto is a phenomenal while his mentor Geronimo stated that he was 'a winner and a complete package'.[17]

In the finale during the first round which was a power ballad theme,[18] Espanto performed Basil Valdez's song "Ngayon" which received a standing ovation including the three coaches.[19] Salonga left a warning to older performers; "To every person Darren idolized, this is a warning to all of you: this kid will be more popular than you someday".Once again, Geronimo praised him and said that despite his talent, Espanto never showed superiority and instead, listened to his coach.[19] At the end of the competition, he once again came in second after Lyca Gairanod.[20]

Juan Karlos Labajo

During ABS-CBN's The Voice Kids Season 1 auditions aired on June 7, 2014, Labajo performed his own rendition of Adam Sandler original "Grow Old With You".[21] Coaches Sarah Geronimo and Bamboo Mañalac both pressed their buttons for him, vocalizing that he can easily tell a story.[22] Despite Geronimo's invitation of him going to her upcoming concert as a guest, he picked Manalac in the end, stating that he could help him a lot raising him as a singer.[22]

Labajo eventually advanced to the finals after singing his cover of "Sway" during the live semi-finals held at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila.[15] He was the third one to receive the highest votes after Lyca Gairanod and Darren Espanto.[16] During the first and second rounds of the finals, Labajo performed "Yesterday"[23] and "Runaway Baby"[24] by The Beatles and Bruno Mars respectively. Salonga stated: "You have the looks, the charm, and the heart. With those three, you're guaranteed a future in this business".[25] In the same way, his coach gave him a similar comment: "I see a singer, an artist, and possibly an actor. I see someone who has the charisma to do it all".[25] Labajo also had a chance to sing a duet with Gary Valenciano during the last round, singing an upbeat song "Heto Na Naman".[26] At the end of the competition, he once again came in third in votes.[27]

Darlene Vibares

During the blind auditions, she sang her own rendition of the song, Girl On Fire by Alicia Keys. Coaches Bamboo Mañalac, Sarah Geronimo, Lea Salonga pressed their "I WANT YOU" buttons and turned their chairs, to show their interest for the young aspirant. Salonga, who was the last to press her button, was surprised by her performance and was picked by Vibares to be her coach.[28]

Vibares did not appear to hesitate with her decision to pick a coach "whose name starts with the letter L." The small "clue" got an elated response from Salonga, who approached Vibares on stage to hug her. The episode was aired on May 24 [28][29]

Together with three other aspirants, they performed the song “Firework” by Katy Perry on The Battles round, Vibares was picked by her coach to advance to the next round.[30][31]

On the sing-offs that were aired on June 29, 2014, Vibares performed her own version of “And I Am Telling You” by Jennifer Holiday, together with Tonton Cabiles, they were picked to advance to the next round of the competition.[30]

Vibares performed Dolly Parton's popular song I Will Always Love You on the live semi- finals that was aired on July 19, 2014, Vibares said that her performance is dedicated to her late grandfather.[32]

During the show's live finals that was held at Resorts World Manila and was aired on July 26, 2014, Vibares sang both Charice Pempengco's "Louder" and Sharon Cuneta's "Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas", she came again fourth at the text vote tallies and was placed as the 3rd runner up of the competition.[33]
