UWC Mahindra College is an International Baccalaureate (IB) pre-university college, located 40 km west of Pune in Maharashtra, India. It is one of the 15 United World Colleges. Established in 1997, the college has a population of about 250 students from all around the world who live together on campus for two years. Alongside academic performance, international experience and community service play a central role in the school's educational concept.

History

On 28 November 1997, Queen Noor of Jordan and Nelson Mandela inaugurated the UWC Mahindra College in India as one of the now fourteen United World Colleges (UWC) and the third UWC in Asia. It had been made possible largely due to financial donations (approximately US $8m) and personal efforts by the Mahindra industrial family (especially the late Harish Mahindra, deceased 1999).

The founding Head of College, Dr. David Wilkinson, had previously founded the Li Po Chun UWC in Hong Kong, together with his wife, Dr. Veronica Wilkinson. In 2009, Dr Jonathan Long, a well known educator from the UK, became the Head of the College. Since 2011, Mr Pelham Lunderfield Roberts has been the Head of College. Mr. Roberts has taught at UWC Atlantic College for many years and was the Head of School in Boca Prep International School (IES Group) in Florida, USA and Hout Bay International School (IES Group) in South Africa, and Head of College in Salem International College, Germany.

Location

The college is located near the village of Paud in the Taluka Mulshi region of the western state of Maharashtra, India. It is around 40 km from the city of Pune (which, in turn, is around 100 km south-east of Mumbai), is located at approximately Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found.. The design incorporates traditional elements and local building materials and won him the Designer of the Year award in 1998.[1] In 2000, the campus also won the American Institute of Architects/Business Week/Architectural Record Award for excellence.[2]
