Martin Plüddemann (29 September 1854 – 8 October 1897) was a German ballad and song composer and music educator.

Biography

Martin Plüddemann was born in Kolberg, the son of the consul and shipowner Friedrich Ludwig Plüddemann and nephew of the painter Hermann Plüddemann. He left the Kolberg Gymnasium early to train as a musician at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1871 to 1876. In 1875 he met Richard Wagner there.

From 1878 he worked briefly as Kapellmeister in St. Gallen. In 1880 he went to Munich as a singing teacher and music critic and emerged there as a writer. In Munich he took singing lessons with Julius Hey. From 1885 he was a singing teacher in Landsberg an der Warthe. In 1887 he became director of the Singakademie in Ratibor. From 1890 he was conductor and singing teacher at the Steiermärkischer Gesangverein in Graz.

In 1894 he returned to Berlin and became a staff member of the Deutsche Zeitung. His artistic work was influenced by the works of Carl Loewe. Plüddemann created 49 ballads and songs, which were published from 1890 by Wilhelm Schmid, Nuremberg. He championed the revival of the ballad and the music of Richard Wagner.

Martin Plüddemann died in Berlin in 1897 at the age of 43 and was buried in the Old St. Matthew's Churchyard in Schöneberg. The grave has not been preserved.
