The Monarchist Party of São Paulo (Portuguese: Partido Monarquista de São Paulo), also known simply as the Monarchist Party (PM-SP), was a Brazilian political party founded during the Old Republic.

History

The Monarchist Party emerged after the rise of a conciliatory civilian government in the person of Prudente de Morais, without the pressure of the Floriano Peixoto government. The party brought together liberals and conservatives, seeking the restoration of the monarchy, after the coup d'état of 1889.

Eduardo Prado led the landed gentry faction (dominated by the coffee industry), while João Mendes de Almeida was more closely linked to the Catholics from the Conservative Party.

It is important to note that this party was not organized along the lines of contemporary party organizations, since the law constitutionally prohibited the formation of any party nucleus opposed to the republican order. Therefore, the Monarchist Party, which did not take part in the national elections, served mainly as a center for debate and discussion of ideas related to republican politics, as well as providing guidance for monarchists.[1]

Members of this group created the Brazilian Monarchical Directory in 1890 and the Monarchist Student Center of São Paulo in 1896.

But in order to collaborate with the new regime, the São Paulo government decided to close down the party and the student center. The party dissolved for good when the police forcefully disbanded a meeting organized by its supporters in protest against the suppression.
