Patricia Wilde

Patricia Wilde was the 56th National Museum of Dance’s Hall of Famer.[1]

Introduction

Born Patricia Lorrain-Ann White in Ottawa, Canada in 1928, she began her career in ballet at the age of 13, under the tutelage of Dorothy Littlefield at the School of American Ballet.[2]She also worked with the International Ballet of the Marquis de Cuevas. She later danced with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo company and then the New York City Ballet, two years after it opened in 1950. For 15 years she was with the New York City Ballet (working with its founder and choreographer, George Balanchine). She spent the same amount of time leading the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater.[3]

Following her retirement (to start a family)[4]she remained active in the industry, directing the Harkness House of Ballet, and assisting Balanchine in setting up the Grand Theatre of Geneva’s school.

Awards and recognition

In 2013 Wilde was recognized received “for her invaluable work as an educator, dancer and director” by Dance Magazine Award[5]and on August 3, 2016, she was officially inducted into the Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Dance Hall of Fame, in Saratoga Springs, NY. At the event, her dance career spanning more than five decades was showcased as well.
