Jiashi (Payzawat) County or Peyziwat County (Uyghur: پەيزاۋات ناھىيىسى?, ULY: Peyzavat Nahiyesi, UYY: Pəyzavat Nah̡iyisi Chinese: 伽师县 pinyin: Gāshīxiàn) (also sometimes spelled as Faizabad or Fayzawat) is a county-level administration of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and is under the administration of Kashgar Prefecture. It contains an area of 6,528 km². According to the 2002 census, it has a population of 320,000. The administrative center of Peyzawat County is a village of the same name.
History
Peyziwat County was established in July 1902. [1] In 1981 there was a brief pro-independence rebellion in the county staged by Uyghur activists.[2] In 1997 there were a series of deadly earthquakes in the county.
The region is also sometimes called "Faizabad" in historic literature.[3][4]
