The Journal of Philosophical Research is a peer-reviewed academic journal sponsored by the University of Notre Dame and the Canadian Philosophical Association. It publishes articles in English or French, from any philosophical orientation. The current editor-in-chief is Michael DePaul (University of Notre Dame). It is published in print and online by the Philosophy Documentation Center.

History of the journal

The journal was established in 1975 as an experimental journal known as the Philosophy Research Archives, which was published in microfiche format in an effort to overcome the space limitations of traditional journals. It was created by the Philosophy Documentation Center in cooperation with the American Philosophical Association and the Canadian Philosophical Association. The founding editor was William Alston. Submissions were accepted in English or French and no limit was placed on the length of submissions. Volumes 1-7 (1975–1981) were published exclusively in microfiche format; there was no print version. Volumes 8-14 (1982–1989) were published in a combination of microfiche and print formats. Shorter pieces were published in the print volume and longer contributions were included in a microfiche supplement to each volume. The combination of formats was complicated and not well accepted and in 1990 the journal was reorganized as the Journal of Philosophical Research in print format. Electronic access for institutions was launched in 1997 and all print issues are available online. The journal continues to publish works of unusual length, such as bibliographies, translations, and commentaries.

Supplements

The Journal of Philosophical Research has occasionally published special supplements in cooperation with the International Federation of Philosophical Societies and the American Philosophical Association.[1]
