Summary: On orders from U.S. President George W. Bush, United States Africa Command has undertaken a mission to airlift humanitarian suplies to Darfur. The Seventeenth Air Force, also known as Air Forces Africa, is coordinating with United States Transportation Command and the 618th Tanker Airlift Control Center to task two C-17 Globemaster III aircraft from the 60th and 349th Air Mobility Wings to deliver 240 containers worth of relief supplies to the region. Additionally, the 615th Contingency Response Wing will assist with the movement of supplies including water tankers, fuel tank trucks, forklifts, and other oversized cargo. The effort is operating out of Kigali, Rwanda in conjunction with United Nations and African Union agencies. The supplies are critical for the war torn region to fight famine and disease and help bring stability back. The airlift began on 13 January and consisted of more than 150 tons of supplies including nine oversized vehicles, water purification systems, water trailers, tents and spare parts. The equipment will be used by the African Union - United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) composed primarily of Rwandan forces.
