René Léopold Lalou (15 September 1877 – 12 August 1973), was a French lawyer and businessman.

Biography

René Lalou was born at the 9th arrondissement of Paris in Seine, the second son of Charles Lalou (1841–1918) and Henriette Capel. His father was a great notable of Lille, an industrialist and a large landowner, a Boulangist deputy of the department of the North and an influential director of the daily newspaper La France from 1881.[1]

After his doctorate in law, René Lalou became a lawyer at the Court of Appeal of Paris from 1901 to 1904. In 1904, he married Marthe Dubonnet (1883–1960), daughter of the industrialist Joseph Dubonnet, who progressively placed her son-in-law at the head of the Dubonnet company to become the co-general manager alongside Émile Dubonnet in 1917.

He also became chairman and CEO of the champagne house G. H. Mumm, in 1935, and of Champagne Perrier-Jouët, in 1959.

He favored the arts and letters and donated to the city of Rheims, on June 19, 1967, the chapel of Notre-Dame de la Paix. This construction was erected by him with the voluntary help of Foujita, whose godfather he was. This architectural and artistic ensemble has achieved international fame and has added to the cultural heritage of the city.

René Lalou was president of the association "Friends of Léonard Foujita", commander of the order of Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand, commander of Agricultural Merit, and commander of the Legion of Honor.

He is buried at the Neuilly-sur-Seine Old Communal Cemetery.

Legacy

To pay tribute to René Lalou, a special cuvée bearing his name was produced from 1966 to 1985. In 2007, the champagne house Mumm decided to revive this mythical vintage. For this, the head of cellars, Didier Mariotti elaborates a champagne of soil resulting from the best plots of the vineyard Mumm and names it René Lalou (Vintage 2002 Cuvée René Lalou). Among the twelve possible sites reserved for the Cuvée René Lalou, Didier Mariotti decided to use six, chosen to highlight and balance the Pinot Noirs that dominate the House's style. Cuvée R. Lalou is made from the twelve best and oldest parcels, those with the most character in the Mumm vineyard: a selection of mythical "lieux-dits", all located in the heart of the region of the best Grands Crus. These parcels are those of Hannepés, Crupots, Rochelles and Houles, located in the terroirs of Ambonnay, Verzy and Verzenay. They represent 53% of the cuvée. The Chardonnays (47%) come from the parcels of Bionnes, Les Briquettes and La Croix de Cramant, located in the terroirs of Avize and Cramant. The cuvée has been aged on lees for ten years and has a low sugar content (6 g/l).[2]
