Plot summary

Susan Miller (Gene Tierney) works as a girdle salesgirl in a big department store. She dreams of living on the other side. An elderly woman, calling herself Mrs. Maybelle Worthington (Spring Byington), comes to buy some underwear. As her partner Warren (Laird Cregar) meets her at the department store to announce her that her daughter run away to get married, they notice the "resemblance" of Susan with their "daughter". They ask her to impersonate her that evening at their party. She sees the opportunity to peek over the other side, dressing in expensive clothes as she never wore before. From that day on, they travel a lot always near some very rich young man in marriageable situation. She is Linda Worthington, with Mother Worthington and Uncle Warren. One day they are vacationing in Southern California, as the accountant John Wheeler (Henry Fonda) who intends to purchase a boat for which he's saved long and hard on his limited income (15.000 $) is trapped in one of their swindles, as they, overhearing John discussing the upcoming transaction, mistake him for a millionaire. But this time Susan/Linda falls in love with the victim and it's a hard way to find their way.
