Royal Vale School (French: École Royal Vale) is a K-11 school in Region 3 of the English Montreal School Board (EMSB). It is an Immersion school at both the elementary and high school levels. Students who graduate from Royal Vale receive a bilingual certificate.
Royal Vale has a 240 status as it is a school with a math and science focus therefore we accept students from all areas in and around Montreal (with an inter-board agreement).
French Immersion, math/science curriculum, critical thinking skills, acceptance, democratic values, extra-curricular activities and leadership roles are all key elements of the mission of Royal Vale School. The school’s philosophy stresses the cooperation and recognition for excellence, lateral enrichment, learning through discovery, manipulation and experimentation and application of knowledge. At the elementary sector, an integrated Compulsory Enrichment Program that includes: Language Arts in French or English, as well as parent sponsored compulsory programs offered after school make Royal Vale unique. The Compulsory Enrichment Program (CEP) at the elementary level offers student enrichment in the domains of mathematics and science, arts and physical education. The secondary sector of Royal Vale offers compulsory extra-curricular activities and intensive studies in mathematics and science. Unlike other secondary schools, selection of courses is very limited at Royal Vale; students must follow a set curriculum.
History
Royal Vale first opened its doors to receive approximately 125 students from Pre-kindergarten to grade 5 in September 1988 at the Dupuis location. Royal Vale also existed as a French Immersion only School in the 1970s at the Dupuis location. The project was initiated by Caroline Kramer- Zilkha, who, together with a dedicated group of parents, including Donna Cooper and Marla Shuster, had a vision to create an alternative math/science elementary school. This alternative school would offer full French immersion,a greater math/science focus and a compulsory supplemental program which offered both Jewish Heritage Studies and academic enrichment.
Due to the overwhelming success of the school,[citation needed]classes expanded the next year to include grade 6, reaching a population of 325 students.
In 1992, due to increasing demand and growing enrollment, Royal Vale moved to its present location on Somerled Avenue in Notre-Dame-de-Grace, the former Westhill High School building. Within five years, three secondary classes were added at each grade level. Presently the school offers a complete program from Kindergarten to Secondary V. The current school population is stable, with an enrollment of 550 secondary students and 500 elementary students.
