Singapore School, Kelapa Gading (SIS-KG), sometimes referred to as SIS Kelapa Gading, is a private, early childhood to Junior College school in North Jakarta, Indonesia. It is a member of the SIS Group of Schools.[1] It is a Cambridge International School[3] and an IB World School[2] as well as being fully registered with the Indonesian Department of Education (Diknas) for the Indonesian national examinations.[4] It is accredited by Diknas rated "A" for Primary (SD) and Secondary (SMP) as a SPK school (national school offering an extended curriculum to both Indonesian and foreign students).

History

In 1995, some members of the Jakarta business community felt the need for a Singapore-style school in the bustling city to cater for expatriate children working in Indonesia. Several initial meetings with Singapore’s Ambassador to Indonesia H.E. Edward Lee fired the enthusiasm needed to start the project. This culminated in a meeting in early 1996 with H.E. Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, Tony Tan who was also then the Education Minister. The inspiration drawn from that meeting set the wheels in motion.

The team moved quickly to secure the help of Raffles Institution, Singapore’s premier school. The expertise of one of Singapore’s most respected educationists Mr. Eugene Wijeyhsingha (former Principal of Raffles Institution[5]) was utilized to give the school a good foundation. And soon afterwards the Board of Governors of SIS successfully lobbied the release of Mr. Magendiran also from Raffles Institution to be the first Principal of the Singapore International School in 1997. Mr. Magendiran is today the Vice-Principal of Raffles Institution, Singapore[6]

The success of the Singapore International School set up in 1997, allowed the Founders of the school and the educationists involved to deeply appreciate the complexities of subjecting Indonesian students to a curriculum modelled after the Singapore education system that demands high standards. The lack of proficiency in English and Mandarin and inconsistencies in the foundations of core subjects like Maths and Science observed in the pioneer batch of Indonesian students pushed for an immediate need for yet another carefully designed curriculum from that used in the Singapore International School for the Indonesian learner.

SIS started two pilot National Plus schools in Kelapa Gading (North-East Jakarta) and Kebon Jeruk (West Jakarta) in 2002. The aim was to monitor the performance of the students in a “controlled environment” with the new designed SIS curriculum especially for the National Plus schools. After 2 years, SIS noted remarkable results of its students and decided it was ready to roll out the schools for the upper and middle income population in Indonesia [1] a vision that secured funding from the International Finance Corporation.[7]

Starting in a converted house as a Preschool in 2002, Singapore School Kelapa Gading grew sufficiently to move to its current large premises on Jl Pegangsaan Dua in 2005, where it became a Cambridge International Centre[3] and then becoming authorised to offer what was then the Cambridge International Primary Program.[8] A four-storey building was added to cater for growth and in 2013, the new swimming pool and Futsal court was completed.

Singapore School Kelapa Gading became a fully authorised IB World school in April 2014[2] and is providing the IB Diploma Programme for its Junior College students from July 2014. As part of this development, a large Junior College Library and Media Centre has been added, providing independent space and a significant collection of physical and online resources for the expanding program. In September, 2014, Singapore School Kelapa Gading changed its name to SIS Kelapa Gading.

Facilities

The school campus is located on the corner of Jl. Pegangsaan Dua and Jl. Hibrida Raya in Kelapa Gading, close to Mal Kelapa Gading. The original building houses administration, meeting areas, a canteen, a library and a multi-purpose hall. The newly built 4-storey building contains classrooms, science labs, IT labs, music and arts rooms and further meeting areas.[9] There are a large number of CCTVs in all areas of the school.

The preschool has its own "smart tools" room as well as a playroom, playground and small pool. The primary school also has a large set of playground equipment. The most recent addition is a Junior College Library and Media Centre on the 4th floor, which serves as the hub of the IB Diploma Programme.

The high quality football field is used during football season as one of the venues for the Jakarta Schools Football League[10] and it lies adjacent to a well-utilised swimming pool and additional futsal court.[9]

Curriculum

Preschool and Lower Primary use curriculum based on the most recent Ministry of Education (Singapore) syllabuses. This is continued into Upper Primary and Lower Secondary except for Science, Math and English. For those core subjects, the school has adopted the Cambridge Primary and Secondary Checkpoint curriculum frameworks. All students sit for Checkpoints exams administered and assessed by Cambridge Examinations in the UK each year.

Upper Secondary students study and take at least 9 International General Certificate of Secondary Education (iGCSE) examinations after a 2-year period of study. Selection of subjects must be compatible with the Cambridge International Certificate of Education (ICE) which requires students to take at least 2 languages, a science, a social studies and an vocational subject. In 2013/14, every student enrolled in the ICE achieved a minimum score of Credit and many students achieved Distinctions.

Junior College students study and take 6 subjects, Theory of Knowledge and the Extended essay, as well as participate in Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) as required for the IB Diploma Program.

All students participate in at least one co-curricular activity from a choice of many options after school each week.

The curriculum used also meets all the requirements of the Indonesian National Curriculum and Indonesian students are prepared for national examinations.

Sporting Achievements

SIS Kelapa Gading is the current record holder for the overall champion school in the annual SIS Olympics, a competition currently including all 8 schools in Indonesia. As of the 2014/15 academic year, SIS-KG has won each of the last 6 SIS Olympics. Competition includes track and field, swimming, tennis, table tennis, badminton, volleyball, basketball and futsal. The futsal competition involving teams from all age groups called the Governors Cup and SIS-KG has also won this cup for the most recent 3 years.

SIS-KG enters its own teams in the Greenfield's Cup of the Jakarta Schools Football League each year (both boys and girls teams[11] and also contributes the majority of the players to a SIS United team comprising players from among the 4 SIS schools in Jakarta.[12] SIS United did very well in the 2015 season, winning several divisions and achieving the Sportsmanship Award for the U12s.[13]

SIS-KG also has a very successful girls volleyball team.
